Beginning on June 15th, the American Anthropological Association will be voting on a resolution to endorse the academic boycott of Israeli institutions. Join us for a discussion of frequently asked questions about the academic boycott and the stakes of the resolution put before AAA members.
Featuring
Omar Barghouti is a Palestinian human rights defender and co-founder of the Palestinian-led BDS movement for Palestinian rights. He is a co-recipient of the 2017 Gandhi Peace Award. He holds a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, NY, and is pursuing a PhD in Philosophy (ethics) at the University of Amsterdam. He is the author of, BDS: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights (Haymarket: 2011). His commentaries have appeared in the New York Times, the Guardian, the Washington Post, and on MSNBC, CNN, among others.
Maya Wind is a Killam Postdoctoral Fellow in Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. Her research on the reproduction and international export of Israeli security expertise has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Social Science Research Council. She is a member of Boycott from Within, Israelis in support of the BDS movement.
Jessica Winegar (Moderator) is Professor of Anthropology and Middle East and North African Studies at Northwestern University. She is a founding member of the BDS movement within the American Anthropological Association. She is also co-author, with Lara Deeb, of Anthropology’s Politics: Disciplining the Middle East, a book which partly addresses anthropology’s relationship to Israel-Palestine.
