ARAB STUDIES INSTITUTE (ASI)
www.ArabStudiesInstitute.org
The Arab Studies Institute is a nonprofit organization that has established itself at the center of the knowledge production landscape on the Middle East in the United States, Europe, and the region. It serves as an institute in its own right and as an umbrella for five organizations that bring to different audiences unique knowledge, scrutiny, voice, and critique that is seldom found under any one roof, via text, audio, and video. Subsidiaries include the Arab Studies Journal, Jadaliyya, Quilting Point, Forum on Arab and Muslim Affairs (FAMA), and Tadween Publishing. ASI’s flagship projects among several others are the Knowledge Production Project (KPP), the Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative (MESPI), and an Audio-Visual Magazine/Podcast, Status/الوضع. Academics, students, journalists, activists, artists, and policy makers have made ASI a go-to place for sound analysis and knowledge in English and/or Arabic.
ASI Subsidiary Organizations
JADALIYYA
Jadaliyya is an independent e-zine that provides a unique source of insight and critical analysis that combines local knowledge, scholarship, and advocacy with an eye to audiences in the United States, the Middle East and beyond. Jadaliyya is run and produced on a primarily voluntary basis by an editorial team and expanding pool of contributors committed to discussing the Arab world on its own terms. Where others see only a security threat, conflict, or data on a graph, we see a region inhabited by living communities and dynamic societies.
QUILTING POINT
Quilting Point is an independent film collective that produces documentaries, educational material, and other audio-visual content related to the Middle East. Its products have long been used as pedagogical material for the classroom and beyond. Quilting Point is the home of the Audio-Visual Podcast, Status/الوضع.
ARAB STUDIES JOURNAL
Arab Studies Journal (ASJ) is a peer-reviewed, multi-disciplinary research publication in the field of Arab and Middle East Studies. ASJ is published by the Arab Studies Institute (ASI) and is housed at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University.
FAMA
Forum on Arab and Muslim Affairs (FAMA) is the research arm of the Arab Studies Institute (ASI). It produces and oversees ASI’s research projects and initiatives on overarching issues related to the Arab and Muslim worlds. The forum is the home of ASI's Knowledge Production Project, the Political Economy Project, and the Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative, among others.
TADWEEN
Tadween Publishing is a new kind of publishing house that seeks to institutionalize a new form of knowledge production. Tadween aims both to publish critical texts and to interrogate the existing processes and frameworks through which knowledge is produced. It involves four dimensions: new forms of publishable knowledge, interactivity with purpose, critical pedagogy, and a blog on the publishing, pedagogical, and research worlds, Diwan.
