Al Jazeera: US Officials Share Details of Raid that Killed ISIL Leader (3 February 2022)
On 2 February 2022 the United States (US) military conducted an operation that killed Islamic State (IS) leader Hashimi al Qurayshi in northwest Syria. Biden maintains that the raid was conducted instead of a bombing to avoid harming an unwitting family living on the first floor below al Qurayshi who were evacuated before the raid. According to the White Helmets, 13 people were killed in the raid.

The week-long battle to reclaim Ghwayran prison, which left at least 374 dead, highlights the reality that IS is regaining its strength. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA): Heavy Snowfall Hits Northern Syria’s Displaced Communities Flash Update #4 (28 January 2022)
OCHA reports that at least 935 tents have been destroyed and 9,562 damaged by an intense snowstorm between 18 and 19 January 2022. In total, 162 snowstorm incidents, 111 flood incidents, and 14 high-speed wind incidents have been reported in camps mostly in Afrin and Azaz districts in Aleppo and Harim district in Idlib since 18 January 2022.

OCHA reports that as of 26 January 2022 following the attack on Sina’a prison in al Hasakeh city up to 5,000 people were stranded in the areas of hostilities and approximately 45,000 people remained displaced across al Hasakeh city and neighboring areas.

UN News: Senior Humanitarian Describes ‘Horror Scenes’ in Syria Camps (25 January 2022)
Mark Cutts, UN Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, described the scenes at IDP camps in northwestern Syria following heavy snow as ‘horror scenes.’ Camp residents lack necessary equipment to respond to the snow like snow shuffles as well as warm protective clothing for sub-zero temperatures, with children walking in snow wearing only sandals.

Al Jazeera: Jordanian Military Kills 27 in Shoot-out with Syrian Smugglers (28 January 2022)
The Jordanian military killed 27 suspected drug smugglers on the Syrian border while some remaining smugglers got away carrying drugs back into Syria. The military also reported that it found large quantities of drugs hidden in Syrian trucks entering through Jordan’s main border crossing.
Human Rights Watch (HRW): Syria: Major Problems with UN Procurement Practices (27 January 2022)
A failure to incorporate human rights principles in the procurement practices by the UN risks financing abusive entities in Syria. A report and guide created by HRW and the Syria Legal Development Programme offers recommendations for UN agencies to strengthen their procurement practices as well as an assessment tool that can be used to better identify Syrian entities that could be involved in human rights abuses

According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), In 2021, Jordan issued a total of 62,000 work permits for Syrian refugees, representing the highest amount since it started to issue permits five years ago.
