This is a call for interns in various positions at the Arab Studies Institute for the Fall of 2019. The Arab Studies Institute is the umbrella organization for the Arab Studies Journal, Jadaliyya, Quilting Point, Forum on Arab and Muslim Affairs (FAMA), and Tadween Publishing.
Below are the specific positions available, as well as general needs and availabilities for interns at the Institute. All ASI team members volunteer their time to one extent or another. “Internships” fit into this formula during the initial internship period with the possibility of a stipend henceforth.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning on August 23rd.
JADALIYYA
Maghreb Page Media Roundup Coordinator
The Maghreb page is seeking an intern with advanced/fluent French and Arabic capabilities, who can help work with the Maghreb team on its weekly media roundup. This roundup focuses on themes and locales within the Maghreb region, collecting important news, current events, and incidences that affect the Maghreb.
Internship responsibilities will include:
- Curate and annotate the media roundup and adding Arabic and French content.
- Perform basic copyediting on all roundup articles, particularly the Arabic and French sections.
- Maintaining a routine weekly schedule for roundup posts.
- Coordinate with the page editor for strategies and content.
Arabic Language Section Assistant Editor and Media Roundup Coordinator
The Arabic section is seeking an intern with advanced/fluent Arabic capabilities, who can work with the Arabic team to administer the page and procure/edit/publish Arabic content.
Internship responsibilities will include:
- Curate and annotate the Arabic media roundup.
- Perform basic copyediting on all roundup articles.
- Maintaining a routine weekly schedule for roundup posts.
- Coordinate with the page editor for strategies and content.
- Able to coordinate across different units and manage information and content flows
- Capable of administering the page's social media platform
- Having access to writers/networks in the Middle East is a major advantage

The Arabian Peninsula page is seeking an intern with advanced/fluent Arabic capabilities, who can help work with the Arabian Peninsula team on its weekly media roundup. This roundup focuses on themes and locales within the Arabian Peninsula, collecting important news, current events, and incidences that affect the AP.
Internship responsibilities will include:
- Curate and annotate the media roundup and adding Arabic content.
- Perform basic copyediting on all roundup articles, particularly the Arabic section.
- Maintaining a routine weekly schedule for roundup posts.
- Coordinate with the page editor for strategies and content.
Turkey Page Media Roundup Coordinator
The Turkey page is seeking an intern with advanced/fluent Turkish capabilities, who can help work with the Turkey team on its weekly media roundup. This roundup focuses on themes and locales within Turkey, collecting important news, current events, and incidences that affect Turkey.
Internship responsibilities will include:
- Curate and annotate the media roundup and adding Turkish content.
- Perform basic copyediting on all roundup articles, particularly the Turkish section.
- Maintaining a routine weekly schedule for roundup posts.

Photography Page Media Roundup Coordinator and Assistant Editor
The Photography page is seeking an intern with, who can help work with the Turkey team on its weekly media roundup. This roundup focuses on themes and locales within Turkey, collecting important news, current events, and incidences that affect Turkey.
Internship responsibilities will include:
- Curate and annotate the photography media roundup.
- Interest and some experience in photography and story-telling
- Able to coordinate across different units and manage information and content flows
- Coordinate with the page editor for strategies and content, and administer social media platform
Resistance, Subversion, and Mobilization Page Media Roundup Coordinator
The Resistance, Subversion, and Mobilization roundup editor will be responsible for managing, scheduling, and augmenting the material for a specific monthly roundup, in coordination with the page editors. This topic is specific to grassroots mobilization, acts of resistance, social movements, etc. that occur across the Middle East and North Africa. Knowledge of Arabic is preferred.
Internship responsibilities will include:
- Curate and annotate the media roundup based on our standard operating procedures.
- Perform basic copyediting on all roundup articles.
- Maintaining a routine monthly schedule for roundup posts.
- Coordinate with the page editor for strategies and content.
KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION PROJECT
KPP (Knowledge Production Project) Researchers
Interns for the Knowledge Production Project will join one of five databases within the project, each with their own mission and procedure for examining and cataloging the production of knowledge on the Middle East.
Internship responsibilities will differ by database: Peer-Reviewed Articles, Books, Think Tank Reports, Book Reviews, Dissertations, Films, TV Shows, Documentaries, Translated Books, and Websites.
In general, internship responsibilities will include:
- Researching and cataloging sources of knowledge production (per the databases above.), and evaluating the content and method of production in different realms.
- Work closely with the coordinator of their respective database to decide upon new paths of research and potential leads for developing the project.
- Interns will be asked to write a 3-5 page report at the end of their internship that addresses knowledge production on the Middle East and/or Muslim World. Specific writing prompts to be worked out with their supervisor.
MIDDLE EAST STUDIES PEDAGOGY INITIATIVE
MESPI (Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative) Researchers
The Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative (MESPI) is a project of FAMA, ASI's research arm. MESPI is a curated interactive platform for Middle East Studies resources specifically tailored to the needs of teachers, researchers, and students.
Internship responsibilities will include:
- Helping to formulate and launch outreach initiatives in tandem with MESPI team leaders, in order to disseminate pedagogical material and to build relationships within the academic community.
- Assist in administrative and research tasks related to MESPI research and databases, including Country and Topical Learning Modules, Films in the Classroom and other projects.
- Contribute to MESPI's development directly by taking initiative and leading new projects.
Peer Review Article Review Interns
"Peer-Reviewed Article Reviews” is a series of articles in which the MESPI editors present a collection of journals and their articles concerned with the Middle East and Arab world. This series will be published seasonally. Each issue will comprise one-to-three parts, depending on the number of articles included.
- Mining and cataloging peer-reviewed articles from online academic sources.
- Analyzing samples of data and identifying trends in knowledge production around a specific country or topic.
MESPI Newsletter Intern
The MESPI Newsletter is a new initiative that will relay current events and initiatives occurring within MESPI, as well as issues of pedagogy, education, and publishing trends more broadly.
- Assist MESPI associate editor in developing the upcoming MESPI newsletter.
- Contribute to MESPI's development directly by taking initiative and leading new projects.
Database Manager: Language Programs and Academic Degrees Databases
The language programs and academic degrees database track information on two interrelated issues. The former tracks information on language programs for Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, and Persian/Farsi all over the world. The latter tracks information on educational programs in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia that grant degrees in Middle East studies, Islamic studies, South Asian Studies, North African studies, and beyond.
- Update and review the language programs and academic degrees databases.
- Have a firm grasp on data mining and managing Google spreadsheet programs.
- Contribute to the range of information available in each database.

Status Audio Journal Video/Audio Editors
Status Audio-Visual Magazine is seeking interns who have experience editing audio and video to help produce shows, interviews, and events on the website.
Internship responsibilities will include:
- Edit audio and video files for ongoing series such as The Nerdiest Show.
- Edit audio and video files for upcoming magazine releases.
- Assist the Status team in keeping up a schedule of audio-visual production.
