Johan Mathew and the Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative (MESPI)

Johan Mathew is assistant professor of History at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He is the author of Margins of the Market: Trafficking and Capitalism across the Arabian Sea, which won MESA’s Roger Owen Award and the Middle East Political Economy Prize. He is currently at work on a book about narcotics consumption and the history of capitalism.


MESPI is a curated interactive platform for ME studies resources specifically tailored for the needs of teachers, researchers, and students. It will be the one-stop shop for course design on the macro level, lesson planning on the micro level, and for scholarship vis-a-vis specific topics, countries, and disciplines.
