As a Palestinian, the conditions of stagnation and malaise that seemed to be increasing in Palestine were obviously at the forefront of my mind. So, I knew I wanted to research some aspect of that stagnation.
Dana El Kurd
Dana El Kurd, of Jerusalem, Palestine, received her PhD in Government from The University of Texas at Austin in June 2017. She is currently a Researcher at the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies and an Assistant Professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies in the Critical Security Studies program. She specializes in Comparative Politics and International Relations. Theoretically, Dana is interested in the conflicts between states and their societies and the contentious politics they produce. She examines how authoritarian regimes try to implement policies and how external intervention may affect their success. Substantively, Dana is interested in international involvement and authoritarianism within the Arab world. Her multi-method research focuses on how authoritarian regimes in the Arab world have maintained durability, as well as the societal impact of this authoritarianism on political engagement. She has been published in Foreign Affairs, The Washington Post’s Monkey Cage blog, and Al-Araby al-Jadeed, as well as academic journals such as Parameters, Journal of Global Security Studies, Contemporary Arab Affairs, Middle East Law and Governance, Journal of Arabian Studies, and more.
