Leyla Tajer

Leyla H Tajer, PhD, is an accomplished scholar and researcher from Iran, specializing in Islamic studies, comparative religion, and women’s studies. She completed her PhD at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), in 2014, where she was recognized as the Best PhD Student for her dissertation on “The Ingredients, Stages, and Experience of Love: A Parallel Exposition of Jalaluddin M. Rumi and Ananda K. Coomaraswamy.” Her BA and MA degrees, both focused on mysticism, were completed at the Islamic Azad University in Tehran, Science & Research Branch. She later pursued a post-doctoral program at ISTAC, IIUM.

 

Dr Tajer's academic contributions include sixteen research articles, fourteen book reviews, and two authored books, along with chapters published by Oxford University. She is also a co-investigator at the Oxford Centre for Christianity and Culture on a project studying “Love in Religion.”

 

Her research primarily focuses on gender dynamics, women's rights, and LGBT inclusivity in Shia societies. She consistently examines how religious doctrines intersect with issues like gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the societal roles of women in patriarchal systems. She has presented her work at twenty-eight international conferences and is currently a MESA Global Academy Scholar (2024-2025).

 

As a lecturer, Dr Tajer teaches a range of courses, including World Religions, Philosophy, Western Civilization, Islamic Thought, and Sufi Literature. She also specializes in the classification, stages, and ingredients of love, with a focus on self-love and the transformative power of love and emotion. Through her teachings, she integrates gender studies to encourage self-empowerment, particularly for women. Dr Tajer is also a workshop conductor and coordinator, offering her expertise in the themes of love in religion and Sufi lyric literature.
