Scott Long

 

Scott Long has campaigned for almost 25 years against human rights abuses based on sexuality and gender. He has documented and advocated against patterns of violations in countries including Albania, Egypt, Hungary, Iraq, Jamaica, Romania, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and the United States. From 1997-2002 he worked as Advocacy Director and Program Director for the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC).  In 2003 he founded the LGBT Rights Division at Human Rights Watch, the first such program in a "mainstream" international human rights organization, and directed it until 2010. Long holds a Ph.D. in English and American literature from Harvard University, has served as a fellow in the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School, and from 1992-4 was a Senior Fulbright Lecturer in American Literature at Babes-Bolyai University in Romania.
