Let us start out by saying that we avoid the term “Middle Eastern” as a colonizer term. We explain in the book our preference for the more neutral geographic terms “Southwest Asian” and the acronym “SWANA” over “MENA.”
Mohja Kahf and Nadine Sinno
Mohja Kahf is currently the James E. and Ellen Wadley Roper Chair in English at the University of Arkansas, where she is also a professor of comparative literature and Middle East studies. She is the author of Western Representations of the Muslim Woman: From Termagant to Odalisque, as well as a novel and three poetry books.
Nadine Sinno is Associate Professor of Arabic at Virginia Tech. Her scholarly work has appeared in journals including the Journal of Arabic Literature, the Journal of Middle East Women’s Studies, Middle East Critique, Middle Eastern Literatures, Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, MELUS, and College Literature. Her publications also include a translation of Nazik Saba Yared’s novel Canceled Memories and a translation with Paula Haydar of Rashid Al-Daif’s novel Who’s Afraid of Meryl Streep? from Arabic to English.
